“Comments” Goals and Norms

“There is nothing in the dark that isn’t there when the lights are on”   – Rod Serling

We of the Master Planning Oversight Committee established this blog to enrich our conversation around our efforts to plan for the future, and to turn the lights on in this particular planning space we occupy together as we move into the future as a congregation.

Through this blog we offer you the opportunity to respond to posts by members of the Oversight Committee and to other “comments,” the goal being to give members of the UUSS religious community a place to reflect and respond to the ideas presented here, and to provide the committee a window into the heartbeat of our community so our oversight efforts may yield richer fruit.

Because we are offering this as a public comment space, it is necessary for us to moderate and approve comments before they are published.  We fully understand this may seem heavy-handed to some who are accustomed to unregulated Internet interaction, so bear with us while we explain our reasoning, as we are committed to a very free exchange of ideas.

First and foremost, by pre-approving the post of any comments submitted, we will be excluding any spam that arrives at the in-box so readers are not subjected to it.

Second, and equally importantly, in order to accomplish our goals, we will be reading comments for their respect for the norms articulated below.  Comments which, in our judgment, fall outside these norms, will receive a private reply from a member of the committee, the goal being to craft the comment such that it is suitable for publication.

Community Comment Norms

  • Comments will be respectful to individual and collective members of the community.
  • Comments that contain questions or requests for clarification will do so with the expectation that the committee will respond to them in a conversational manner.  Rhetorical questions are not useful in this forum.
  • Comments which offer criticism will do so in a constructive fashion, and seek to offer alternative courses of action.
  • Comments will seek to promote dialog and further thoughtful discussion.

We invite your comments and questions…
